What to do — a half-day plan
- Prospect Point (free) — the iconic view of American Falls. 5-minute walk from the parking lot. Get here first thing morning before the crowds.
- Observation Tower ($1.25) — elevator to the bridge level and an extension out over the gorge. Best photo angle of American Falls.
- Cave of the Winds ($21 adult) — the unmissable. Wear the disposable poncho/sandals they hand out. You walk wooden stairs to within spray distance of Bridal Veil Falls. 30-45 minutes.
- Maid of the Mist ($28.25) — boat to the foot of Horseshoe Falls. Operates from American side May-October. Soaked but worth it.
- Goat Island walking loop (free) — connects the islands between the two falls. Three Sisters Islands viewpoint is a quieter alternative to Prospect Point.
If you have a full day, add a 15-minute walk to Whirlpool State Park(3 miles downriver) for the river-level view of the Niagara whirlpool. Free.

Common questions
What's the difference between the American and Canadian sides of Niagara Falls?
The American side has American Falls (180 ft) and Bridal Veil Falls (78 ft) — you stand RIGHT next to them, with Cave of the Winds letting you walk to within 20 feet of the lip. The Canadian side has Horseshoe Falls (the big one, 188 ft tall and 2,600 ft wide) and a panoramic view of all three falls together. The Canadian side has the postcard view; the American side has the immersive experience.
Do I need a passport to visit Niagara Falls from the American side?
No. The American side is in New York state — same passport requirements as the rest of the US. You only need a passport (or enhanced ID / NEXUS) if you cross the Rainbow Bridge into Canada.
What's there to do on the American side?
Three main attractions: (1) Observation Tower — best straight-down view of American Falls, $1.25 elevator, (2) Cave of the Winds — wooden walkway to the base of Bridal Veil Falls, $21 adult/$17 child, you WILL get soaked, (3) Maid of the Mist boat — same boat that runs from both sides, sails to the foot of Horseshoe Falls, $28.25 adult.
How much does the American side cost?
Niagara Falls State Park itself is FREE (the oldest state park in the US, est. 1885). Parking is $10/vehicle in summer. Individual attractions: Observation Tower $1.25, Cave of the Winds $21, Maid of the Mist $28, Discovery Pass (covers most) $59 adult. Without paying anything you can still walk the entire rim and Goat Island for amazing views.
Where do I park on the American side?
Main Niagara Falls State Park lot off Robert Moses Parkway — $10/day, walking distance to all falls. Cheaper lots exist 10-15 min walk away. Avoid the privately-operated lots near Rainbow Bridge that charge $25+. Cell coverage is good throughout.
How long should I plan to spend on the American side?
Full day if doing Cave of the Winds + Maid of the Mist + walking Goat Island. Half day for just the viewpoints (Prospect Point, Observation Tower, Three Sisters Islands). Most people who add the Canadian side stay 1-2 nights total.
Is the American side worth it if I can only see one side?
If you can only do one: Canadian side for the postcard view, American side for the actual experience. Cave of the Winds is the best part of Niagara on either side — you literally feel the spray of Bridal Veil Falls. Canadian side has bigger crowds and more tourist infrastructure.
When is the best time to visit Niagara Falls from the American side?
Late spring through early fall (May-September) for full water flow + Cave of the Winds open. Cave of the Winds typically operates mid-May to late October. Winter is dramatic with ice formations but most attractions are closed. Weekends are crowded; Tuesday-Thursday is significantly quieter.
